With the mountains surrounding the town of Garut, it has an impact on the upstream and downstream areas, this means that there are many tributaries in the upstream section which gather into large rivers in the downstream section, namely Cimanuk River. This river is one of the large rivers on the island of Java and has a great influence on the livelihoods of the surrounding community.
2. Nicknamed Diamond town by President Soekarno: Diamond town is the nickname for Garut, which was first given by President Soekarno in the 1960s. At that time Bung Karno visited Garut Regency for an official visit. At that time, Bung Karno saw that Garut was very clean, the views were beautiful, the people were orderly, and comfortable for guests. Therefore, Bung Karno in his speech declared that the Garut was the town of “INTAN” (diamond), which stands for INdah (beautiful), Tertib (orderly), Aman (safe), and Nyaman (comfortable).
3. Has the nickname ‘Switzerland Van Java‘: Garut Regency has the nickname Switzerland Van Java, which was obtained because the natural landscape is similar to the Swiss mountains. While Switzerland is the meeting point between the western and eastern Alps, which pass through Italy, France and the Eastern Alps, Garut is surrounded by mountains from Papandayan, Guntur, to Cikuray. All three are destinations for mountain climbers and nature lovers. The beauty of the Garut mountains was also immortalized by Ahmad Abdullah Assegaf in his novel entitled Papat Garut, written in 1928.
4. Have typical Garut dodol food: Those who visit Garut will be incomplete if they don’t enjoy Dodol Garut. This typical food is very famous and has even ranked Garut as a producer of high quality dodol. Historically, the Garut dodol industry was developed starting in 1926 by a female entrepreneur named Karsinah. It continues to survive until now. With this food, Garut Regency’s nickname has increased, namely Dodol Town.
5. Have Garut sheep: Garut sheep are the result of a cross between local sheep with Kapsta sheep from South Africa, and Merino sheep from Australia. These sheep were initially hunted wildly and eventually bred. Typical Garut sheep have an upright body posture and sturdy horns. Usually, the fur on the neck is allowed to grow long, resembling lion fur, and if you look closely, the Garut sheep’s horns have different characteristics from the horns of other sheep. However, apart from the traditional art of sheep fighting, like sheep in general, Garut sheep are also raised for their meat.
